Sapphire, ruby or emerald: what determines price?

There is no universal price for a “one-carat gemstone”. Start with species, colour and intended use, then compare similar offers within that group. Weight, measurements, appearance, treatments and documentation belong in the same comparison.

Ruby and sapphire are varieties of corundum; emerald is a different material. The GIA ruby buying guide and GIA sapphire buying guide identify colour as a leading quality factor. A gemstone’s name alone does not determine its price bracket.

Compare the three gemstones

GemstoneComparison focusClarify before choosing
SapphireDesired colour, evenness and measurementsIs there evidence of heating or another treatment?
RubyRed colour, visible inclusions and proportionsWhich treatments are disclosed in the report and listing?
EmeraldGreen colour, inclusions and suitability for the designIs clarity enhancement disclosed, and what care is needed?

GIA’s emerald quality guide explains that a clarity treatment classification is not an overall clarity grade. Do not automatically transfer diamond categories such as VS1 to coloured gemstones.

Review photographs and video while allowing for differences in lighting and screen rendering. For an existing setting, use exact measurements rather than carat weight alone. If geographic origin matters to your selection, check whether the individual laboratory report covers it.

Find current gemstone prices and build a comparison

Browse current loose sapphire offers, rubies or emeralds. Narrow by weight and budget, open candidate stones and compare the documentation provided.

  1. Record the species, colour and measurements required by the design.
  2. Select several stones with comparable criteria and disclosed treatments.
  3. Compare total stone price and price per carat in the same currency and on the same terms.
  4. Confirm availability, shipping and appropriate care before ordering.

For a coloured gemstone ring or a pair of earrings, send a sourcing brief with shape, measurements, budget and deadline. For a pair, explain the required colour and size match. Matching weight alone does not establish that two stones will work together in the finished jewellery.
