Is a lab-grown diamond moissanite?

No. A laboratory-grown diamond is diamond. Moissanite is a different material, silicon carbide, while cubic zirconia is another simulant. Similar appearance does not mean identical composition.

GIA distinguishes laboratory-grown diamonds from simulants: lab-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical and physical properties as natural diamonds. Their laboratory-grown origin still needs to be clearly disclosed.

What should the description tell you?

MaterialCheck before choosing
Natural diamondExplicit natural origin and documentation for the stone.
Lab-grown diamondLaboratory-grown / lab-grown disclosure and a matching report where available.
MoissaniteThe material’s actual name; do not compare it as a diamond of equal weight.

Terms such as “created stone” or “diamond sparkle” leave important details unanswered. Request the precise material, measurements in millimetres and the document supplied with the purchase. If a listing uses “one-carat equivalent”, establish whether that describes approximate visible size or actual weight.

For a lab-grown diamond, read the report type and date. Different laboratories and services do not necessarily use identical designations. Our GIA and IGI guide explains what to check; verify the report number with its issuer. A photograph or a claim that a stone “passes a tester” is not enough to establish origin.

Compare prices for the actual jewellery project

If your brief requires a laboratory-grown diamond, start in the lab-grown diamond catalogue. Set shape, weight and budget, then compare measurements, available reports and the final price. Use our natural vs lab-grown diamond guide to compare the two origins.

When comparing a moissanite quotation with a lab-grown diamond quotation, list material as a separate field. Align visible size, stone price, setting, metal and terms so you can see what changes the total. A lower price alone establishes neither identity nor a defect.

Contact us about a specific stone with its product link and your jewellery requirements if the report or measurements need clarification. Resolve those details before selecting a setting or comparing a loose stone with a finished ring.
