GIA vs IGI certificate: what to verify

Compare the report, not the logo alone.

GIA and IGI are independent gemological laboratories that issue grading reports. A report identifies a particular stone and records measured or assessed characteristics; it is not a guarantee of future price, investment return or availability.

The useful question is not simply “GIA or IGI?” It is whether the number is verifiable, whether the document matches the offer and whether the stone satisfies the brief.

A disciplined verification sequence

1. Enter the number in the issuing laboratory’s official report-check service.
2. Match carat, measurements, shape, colour, clarity and identifying characteristics.
3. Check the report date and type, including the stated natural or laboratory-grown origin.
4. Compare proportions, polish, symmetry and fluorescence where reported.
5. Where inspection is possible, match any laser inscription to the document.

Choose the stone after the document checks out

Two stones with the same grades on paper can look different. Use the report as a foundation, then assess imagery, video, proportions and inclusion placement.

Verify the report and check GIA's current format

Check the number directly with GIA Report Check or IGI Verify Your Report. Match the number, weight, measurements and stated origin to the individual offer.

Since October 1, 2025, GIA's new quality assessment for D–Z laboratory-grown diamonds uses Premium and Standard descriptions. Check the document's date and type; the new format does not use the nomenclature for natural diamonds. GIA's official assessment criteria.
