Diamond vs brilliant: what is the difference?

Diamond names the material; brilliant describes a cutting style. A round brilliant is a familiar diamond shape and facet arrangement, rather than a separate gemstone species. Diamonds are also available in oval, pear, rectangular and other shapes.

GIA describes the modern round brilliant as having 57 or 58 facets, depending on the culet. Facet count alone is not enough to judge an individual offer.

Read shape, cut and origin separately

A request for a one-carat brilliant still needs origin, colour, clarity, budget and intended use. Two round diamonds of equal weight may have different appearances and prices. A cut grade, where the report includes one, should be read alongside proportions, polish, symmetry, photographs and video.

Do not automatically apply a round diamond’s grading framework to an oval or emerald shape. Establish which information is available for that shape and check its measurements against the jewellery design. A setting selected for one stone may not suit another of the same weight.

3. Review each report and the available media. Ask your jeweller to check measurements for an existing setting.
