Use the 4Cs to start a shortlist

Consider colour, clarity, cut and carat weight together. D–Z describes the normal diamond colour range; fancy-colour diamonds are considered separately. Verify the terminology and report type for the individual stone.

D–Z colour and clarity

Clarity describes inclusions and surface features. FL, IF, VVS1–VVS2, VS1–VS2, SI1–SI2 and I1–I3 are distinct grades. A grade does not replace photographs, video and assessment of the individual inclusion pattern.

Fancy-colour diamonds

Choose a colour family and establish whether the colour is natural or treated. The origin of the diamond and the origin of its colour are different questions.

Compare yellow, pink, blue, green, brown and black diamonds by the exact colour and documentation. Open the Fancy group and check the hue in the individual stone’s description and report.

The report must match the stone

Not every laboratory report uses the same system. Read the issuer, date and document type. Verify a particular GIA or IGI number through the official service and compare measurements with the offer.
