Natural vs lab-grown diamonds: how to choose
A clear comparison of origin, specifications, grading reports, price and intended use — without claiming that one choice is universally better.

Two origins. One disciplined comparison.
A natural diamond forms in the earth, while a lab-grown diamond is created in a controlled environment. Both should be compared through verifiable attributes: measurements, shape, colour, clarity, proportions, fluorescence, grading report and current price.
This is not a choice between a “real” and a “fake” diamond. Origin is the material distinction. Simulants such as cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials and should not be described as diamonds.
Compare evidence, not marketing claims

Compare stones with closely matched specifications, not carat weight alone. Two diamonds of the same weight can face up differently because of diameter, proportions, cutting and the placement of inclusions.
Make the decision around the brief
There is no universal “better” origin. Define what matters for the purchase: geological origin, face-up size, target specifications, budget, deadline and intended use. Then compare current offers using the same framework.
Before ordering, verify the original grading report, certificate number, availability, final price, tax treatment and delivery estimate. A unique stone can be reserved or sold between search and confirmation.
Verify the report and check GIA's current format
Check the number directly with GIA Report Check or IGI Verify Your Report. Match the number, weight, measurements and stated origin to the individual offer.
Since October 1, 2025, GIA's new quality assessment for D–Z laboratory-grown diamonds uses Premium and Standard descriptions. Check the document's date and type; the new format does not use the nomenclature for natural diamonds. GIA's official assessment criteria.
